Danny Reidy returns to Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway this Saturday night as the proud winner of his longest ever Sprintcar main event.
The Queensland based Alice Springs born racer was the jubilant victor in last weekend’s 50-Lapper at Hi-Tec Oils Speedway and now comes back to his home track Parramatta with a boost in confidence.
Reidy, who burst on to the national scene in the early 2000’s as a fresh new face on the World Series Sprintcars scene, has been driving for two different car owners in two states over the last few USC (Ultimate Sprintcar Championship) seasons.
The Mitchell Family have provided Reidy with a potent package to run in Toowoomba and he runs his regular family owned Desert Palms Resort #5 in Sydney for the USC NSW rounds.
His victory in Queensland was a popular one amongst fans and his rivals alike.
“Danny’s a very popular racer on both sides of the fence,” says Toowoomba Speedway manager Ben Bishop, “his cheeky sense of humor, his love of a good time and his passion for Sprintcar racing is well documented. It was great to see him get a breakthrough win here at Hi-Tec Oils Speedway.”
The win is also a victory for Reidy’s long-supporting Mum Angie who has backed Danny’s racing dream (along with in the early days his Dad Peter) for near enough to twenty years at an elite level.
A win like this, particularly over the gruelling distance of 50-laps, will surely now give Reidy a boost in confidence as he returns home for this Saturday night’s Ultimate Sprintcar Championship NSW battle.
“We’ve had some good speed since Christmas,” Reidy admits, “we’ve been fast at places that I didn’t necessarily expect, like the Aussie title at Mount Gambier for example. We’ve shown that we’re always up there but it’s not easy to break through for a win at this level. Sprintcar Racing is tough.”
Reidy’s victory is the second consecutive ‘surprise win’ at the 50-lapper in Towoomba with local racer David Whell winning the previous year.
Sydney driver Troy Little hopes to go back to back A-Main wise after scoring the rain-shortened feature victory a fortnight ago in his Steve Lynch owned #20 Pit Stop Autos entry.
Little, a former Parramatta track champion and veteran of first Litre Car then Sprintcar racing, has been a model of consistency this year and is ‘coming home with a wet sail’ in this season’s USC NSW points.
“We don’t do anything differently from week to week,” says the laid back throttle stomper, “we just go out there and make fast circles. You can’t get too worked up about these things. Sometimes you get it right other times it’s a bit harder. You just take any of the positives that you can.”
Also returning this weekend after a big Saturday night last weekend is newly married Sam Walsh.
The driver of the Rocket Industries #92 GF1 tied the knot with fianc Meredith who donned a special “Mrs 92” jacket she’d had made especially for the occasion over her wedding dress for a couple of photos.
The intimate gathering was held at the couple’s family home in Orangeville and the car that was used as a wedding prop is now back in full race trim for this weekend as Walsh chases another USC victory.
The field will also be bolstered by the return of livewire Tasmanian Shaun Dobson who has been sharing his time between his own family team car and that of Victorian Dave Dickson in various race engagements in Victoria and in Sydney.
